SCBT Donates $100,000 to TRMC
(COLUMBIA, SC – July 9, 2013) South Carolina Bank and Trust (SCBT) announced today that it will contribute $100,000 to The Regional Medical Center.
“SCBT is one of our community’s leading philanthropic supporters, and we are thrilled that they have stepped up and provided such a true leadership gift this early in the campaign,” said Donna Matthews, president of the RMC Foundation.
The donation, which will be paid over five years, will allow the foundation to provide much needed services, including funding programs that benefit uninsured individuals within the local community.
One of the Foundation’s newest projects is to create a Dialysis Access Institute and to expand the Mabry Center for Cancer Care. According to research conducted by the RMC, roughly 80% of all oncology-related health care is delivered in an outpatient setting.
“We see the value every day of the Regional Medical Center. Our employees, our customers and the entire community benefit from both the healthcare and economic impact of the hospital,” said F. Gene McConnell, SCBT executive vice president and Orangeburg regional president. “We’re pleased to join other community leaders in making this campaign for cancer care and dialysis access surgery a reality.”
The Regional Medical Center’s primary service area of Bamberg, Calhoun and Orangeburg counties has the highest incidences of diabetes in the nation at almost twice the national average. The volume of patients in this service area has led to the ground-breaking work being pioneered and now performed by the RMC’s Dialysis Access Institute surgical team.
“There are a lot of changes coming to healthcare in the next few years, and many challenges exist for RMC and other small community hospitals. The support of the local community is critical to help community hospitals survive and thrive,” said McConnell.
“On behalf of the community, we extend our deepest and sincerest appreciation to SCBT for their generous support,” said Margaret Frierson, interim RMC Foundation director.
The Mabry Center expansion will add 8,560 square feet to the existing 10,145 square foot facility. These improvements will have the greatest impact on the chemotherapy and radiation treatment areas. In the chemotherapy treatment area, the space created by the expansion will shorten wait times, increase accessibility, make room for family and friends, and create a warm, welcoming environment. The new, state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator will handle increasing patient volumes in the radiation treatment area.
